Toseland pragmatic about Brickyard woes

Tech3 Yamaha´s tough British competitor James Toseland wants to put his inconsistent form behind him in the last four races of his debut MotoGP campaign.

James Toseland´s year of learning the ropes in MotoGP is just four races from its conclusion following the historic round fourteen visit to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with the tough Briton hoping to push his way back up the standings after a difficult weekend in the States.
The Tech3 Yamaha rider will not remember the Indy adventure fondly given the difficulties he faced in the race and the tough time he had learning the track and setting up his YZR-M1 at another new circuit – his job made even harder by the torrential rain on Friday and Sunday.
`The conditions were just horrendous,´ said Toseland as he reflected on Sunday´s race. `The organisers did a really good job of stopping it when they did because it wasn´t rideable out there. It was unbelievable. The rain wasn´t so bad, it was starting to puddle slightly into turn one like it did on Friday, but the wind was getting to a stage where it was blowing canopies down in pitlane, so it was really, really strong.´
Reviewing the weekend as a whole he declared, `After Misano, where I was back in the top six and riding hard, I came here and my confidence was high. Qualifying didn´t go too bad in tenth position, but we made a mistake on my qualifying tyres so I should have been on the front two rows, I thought. If it was dry on Sunday we would have been in with a shout.´
A race eventually curtailed by the remnants of Hurricane Ike hitting the new IMS MotoGP layout saw Toseland make a decent start as he moved up to eighth place from tenth on the grid in the early running. However, six laps into the contest and Toseland was moving backwards quickly, due to an unsuitable tyre choice and a less than perfect setting, as the track began to dry.
When the red flag was brought up to end his misery Toseland was classified eighteenth as the race results were finalised, leaving him to comment, `At the beginning of the race I thought things were going pretty well, but it didn´t rain during the middle of the race and as it dried out my setting was slightly too soft for the conditions. It then rained again towards the end but the race was stopped unfortunately so it was frustrating.´
Not having the benefit of previous World Championship visits to nearly half circuits on the calendar this year, unlike his fellow 2008 premier class debutants Jorge Lorenzo, Andrea Dovizioso and Alex de Angelis who have all graduated from the smaller Grand Prix categories, Toseland has had a major challenge on his hands since joining Herve Poncharal´s Tech3 outfit.
Finishing four of his first seven MotoGP races in the top six, Toseland made a good start to the year. But ever since his disastrous - and heartbreaking - seventeenth place at his home GP at Donington he has only once managed to place amongst the top six again, in that aforementioned Misano outing.
Summarising the overall picture as he glanced at the remaining four dates on the calendar, Toseland added, `Motegi in Japan is the last track of the eight I have had to learn this year, so that is going to be another tough weekend I am sure. I just want the weather to be consistent, I have been praying for that all year. But it has not happened that way, I think there have only been two rounds where it has not rained at all.´
`Then obviously at Phillip Island I will be really confident, I have done well there in the past, then Malaysia where I tested in the winter time and then it is back to Valencia where I have done quite a few miles as well, so hopefully I can have a strong end to the season.
